A growing youth-led movement called Vote16 says 16 is old enough to vote in local elections. Thirteen cities around the country have already passed a measure like this.
When this was on the ballot in Culver City in 2022, the measure failed by just 16 votes, the smallest margin of any election in LA County that year.
Lowering the voting age has been shown to create lifelong voters. When people start voting at sixteen, it becomes a lifelong habit.
At our February 9th city council meeting, a new generation came out to ask for another chance to lower the voting age for local elections and, in a meeting that went to 2;30 am, the Culver City Council voted 3-2 to put a measure on the Culver City ballot to allow 16 year olds to vote in local elections with Mayor Freddy Puza, Vice Mayor Fish, and Councilmember Yasmine-Imani McMorrin voting in favor and Dan O’Brien and Albert Vera voting in opposition.
