Former Culver City Democratic Club President and Editor of Active Democrat newsletter Pete Rockwell with his wife—Club Treasurer and Assistant Editor of this newsletter—Cynthia Hart

I don’t remember when I started doing the Culver City Democratic Club newsletter. It was before October of 2017, but after Donald Trump first won the election for President of the United States in November of 2016. I was a Bernie Sanders supporter at the beginning of the Presidential race, and when Hillary Clinton won the Democratic nomination I voted for her, of course. I thought she would win—and she would have if we didn’t have the Electoral College. She got three million more votes than Trump.

I had my eightieth birthday last month, and lately I’ve start acting again. I’m still a member of Actors Equity Association and SAG-AFTRA, and I’ve taken part in some live performances with fellow acting students at the Culver City and Claude Pepper (Los Angeles) senior centers. They are free and I recommend them to anyone who is interested. It’s a great way to meet people and spend a couple of hours, even if you don’t have ambitions to turn professional.

To make a living while raising my son, Sam, I started working for newspapers as a typographer. I worked mostly at the San Francisco Newspaper Agency, which published the Chronicle and the Examiner. Eventually, newspaper typography got automated out of existence. By that time I had earned a pension from my work in newspaper composing rooms and from working as a union organizer for a number of years.

I started collecting Social Security and, eventually, my pension. I moved to Los Angeles in the hope of getting work as an actor again. I’ve done a bit of acting since I moved to LA, but not the kind that pays actual money, although I did make some money doing background acting for a few years.

After this newsletter, I suspect the Club will start to put out our newsletter in a different format, since we haven’t mailed out paper copies of the newsletter for quite a while. My suggestion is to put our newsletter articles on the Club website—https://www.c-c-d-c.com—and send out a monthly email to our mailing list with links to the new articles on the Club website. I hope to continue to contribute articles.
