Both of the candidates for LA County District Attorney used to be Republicans. George Gascon switched to No Party Preference in 2009, when he became San Francisco Police Chief, and re-registered as a Democrat to run for DA there in 2011. He said he had voted for Bill Clinton and Barack Obama for President and Nancy Pelosi for Congress.Nathan Hochman didn’t disclose his votes, but he was appointed to an Assistant Attorney General position by George W. Bush and ran for California Attorney General as a Republican in 2022. He re-registered No Party Preference in 2023.Gascon changed parties because of his values and what he saw happening in the world. He’s open to changing his mind based on new information.Hochman changed parties because he knew he couldn’t get elected DA as a Republican. The platform is the same; only the label has changed. He’s an opportunist.Hochman worked for George W. Bush, stayed a Republican while Trump took over that party, and ran as a Republican in 2022.
